On 12 June 2016 I packed up my bags in Newcastle Australia, got on the train for Sydney airport, and then flew to Mongolia. I will be spending a year living in the capital, Ulaanbaatar city, working for the National Emergency Management Agency.
I am on an Australian volunteer program along with more than a dozen other Aussies, working in different fields in government, NGOs and the UN. It’s taken a few weeks to get settled, but now I’ve got a sweet apartment, nicer than anywhere else I’ve ever lived! Okay, the hot water hasn’t worked since I moved in, but that’s normal. The city repairs the hot water pipes over summer and we all have to have cold showers for a few weeks.
Like a lot of the expats, I’ve been obsessing about what kind of sports and exercise I can do here. I’ve lined up a pretty nice gym and found a group of runners and a few races to do. If I can find some rock climbing I’ll be complete!
