When I’m camping I usually don’t have much trouble getting to sleep. The darkness makes me sleepy no matter how early it is, usually combined with a large hot meal and a cup of tea. However, I still like to put the headphones in and listen to a couple of songs as I’m dozing off. There are also those times when you turn in early for a nervous night, knowing you’ve got to wake up at midnight to leave camp, and you can use a little help.
I’ve put together my list of the 10 Best Songs To Go To Sleep To When Camping as a completely subjective guide to dozing off in the outdoors. So here we go, starting with…
#1 Mad World – Danny Jules version. I love this song after hearing it in the movie Donnie Darko. Haunting, if a bit depressing.
#2 Heartbeats – José González. I have a great memory of this song after a TV company used it in a great add with bouncing balls. Not a great reason to like a song, but there you go.
#3 Forever – Ben Harper. Ben Harper represents my University days. Great music, and not the kind of thing that’s played to death on the radio either.
#4 I See Fire – Ed Sheeran. It is possible to hear too much of Ed Sheeran these days, but he’s still a great musician and I live the video from the Hobbit that goes with this song.
#5 Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley or Leonard Cohen. This is a classic, no matter how many times I hear it or how many people cover it. It was even in Shrek for goodness sake.
#6 Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall – Bob Dylan. Something from Bob had to be in here, and this is great poetry. It’s also over six minutes long, so you get your money’s worth.
#7 Rainbow Connection – Kermit the Frog. Okay, it’s a little clichéd, but how can you beat Kermit.
#8 I’m on Fire – Bruce Springsteen. Not my favourite song from The Boss, but an easy one to go to sleep to.
#9 Walking After You – Foo Fighters. A classic from The Colour and the Shape, one of my all-time favourite albums.
#10 Clair de Lune – Claude Debussy. And finally, a token bit of culture. Classical music puts me to sleep sometimes, but that’s the point here.
